Protection for Busy Households

Impact windows in Fellsmere are usually a family decision about time and money. This is one of the youngest towns we serve: the 2020 census put the median age at 28.7, and the town's 1,431 homes sit in central Indian River County, between Sebastian and Blue Cypress Lake. Parents working long hours do not want to spend a storm-watch weekend on a ladder hanging panels. Glass that is always in place gives that time back.

Phasing the work

For many families, replacing every opening at once is a big step. Doing it in phases is common: 1. Bedrooms first, since that is where everyone sleeps during a storm 2. The front entry door and the back slider, the two largest openings 3. Remaining living-area windows 4. The garage door, which protects the whole house from wind getting inside

Keep in mind that replacing more than 25 percent of a home's glazing within 12 months means every replaced opening must be impact rated or shuttered. Since we are installing impact glass anyway, that is easy to plan for.

Water as well as wind

Fellsmere has a history of heavy rain and flooding. In November 2023, nearly 14 inches of rain fell and caused major flooding in town. A window's water resistance rating matters during storms like that, when rain is driven sideways for hours. We look at the water rating on each product and make sure flashing and sealant are done right at each opening, especially on the side of the house facing the prevailing wind.

A town with real history

Fellsmere was incorporated in 1911, and when its city charter was adopted in 1915, it became the first place in Florida where women could vote. Zena M. Dreier cast her ballot on June 19, 1915, five years before the 19th Amendment. The town grew around the Fellsmere Railroad, which ran from 1910 to 1952. Older homes near the original town center may have wood framing and openings that need attention before new windows go in.

Permits

Fellsmere is an incorporated city. Check with the city about where to apply, since some small cities in the county use county building services and some run their own. We confirm the process at the estimate and file the paperwork with product approvals for each unit.

Doors are part of the plan

Impact entry doors and impact sliding glass doors close the biggest gaps in a home's protection. Many families start there, because the front door and back slider are the two openings everyone uses every day.

Questions to ask any installer

  • Which product approval number covers each window, and what design pressure is it rated for?
  • What design pressure does each of my openings require?
  • Who pulls the permit, and who meets the inspector?
  • How will you seal and flash each opening?
  • What happens if you find rotten framing once a window is out?

We answer all of these in writing with the estimate.

Fellsmere Questions

Can I replace windows a few at a time?

Yes. Many families start with bedrooms and the main doors. We plan phases around the code rule on replacing more than 25 percent of a home's glazing in 12 months.

Do impact windows help with rain?

Each product carries a water resistance rating. Proper flashing and sealing at install matters just as much, and we take care with both.
