Replacing Old Glass With Hurricane-Rated Windows

Impact windows replace an ordinary window with a unit built to survive a hurricane: laminated glass set in a heavier frame, anchored into the wall to a tested pattern. In Port St. Lucie that usually means swapping out original aluminum single-pane windows on an older block home, or standard windows on a newer one that still depend on shutters someone has to put up every storm. Once impact windows are in, the windows are protected around the clock.

Styles we install

  • Single-hung: the bottom sash slides up. The most common style in local homes and usually the least expensive impact unit.
  • Horizontal roller: one sash slides sideways. Good for wide, short openings and bedroom windows.
  • Casement: cranks open on a hinge and seals tight when closed. Catches more breeze when open.
  • Picture and fixed: no moving parts, so they handle large sizes and higher pressures well.
  • Architectural shapes: arches, half-rounds and transoms over entries, built to the measured shape.

Glass choices

Every impact unit uses laminated glass. Beyond that you can choose a single laminated lite, or an insulated laminated unit with an air space and a Low-E coating that reflects heat. On west-facing walls and big lanai views, the insulated version keeps rooms noticeably cooler. Tint, obscure glass for bathrooms and grid patterns are also options.

Frame material

Aluminum frames are strong and slim, which suits wide openings and high design pressures. Vinyl frames insulate better and cost a little less for standard sizes. White and bronze are the usual colors, and HOAs in planned communities often specify one or the other.

Fit matters as much as glass

Block homes usually get an inset installation: the old frame comes out, the unit is set into the masonry opening and fastened with anchors at the spacing in its product approval. Wood-frame homes often take a fin-style frame. The City's window permit application asks which method is used, and the anchor schedule is part of what the inspector checks. Gaps are sealed and the stucco return is patched so water stays out in a sideways summer rain.

Bedroom windows

Bedroom windows must still open wide enough to work as an emergency escape. When we change styles, for example from a single-hung to a fixed window, we make sure each bedroom keeps a code-compliant exit.

3. Permit and order

We submit the permit with product approvals and order units built to your sizes.

Impact Windows Questions

How long do impact windows take to arrive?

Impact units are made to order, so lead time runs from a few weeks to a couple of months depending on the manufacturer and season. Lead times usually stretch before and during hurricane season.

Can impact glass break?

The outer layer can crack when hit hard. The laminated interlayer holds the pieces in place and keeps the opening closed. A cracked unit should be replaced afterward, but it has done its job.

Are impact windows worth it over shutters?

They cost more per opening, but they need no setup, protect you when you are away, and also cut noise and heat. Shutters are the lower-cost route. Many owners choose impact glass for windows and shutters for one or two large openings.

Do impact windows help with noise and heat?

Yes. Laminated glass dampens outside noise well, and an insulated Low-E package cuts solar heat through the glass. Neither replaces good attic insulation, but rooms on sunny sides feel the difference.
