Your Largest Opening Deserves the Most Attention
Impact sliding glass doors replace the wall of glass that opens most Port St. Lucie homes onto the lanai and pool. That opening is often eight to sixteen feet wide, and in a storm it carries more wind load than any window in the house. It is also the opening owners most often leave until last, because shutters across it are a chore and the old slider still slides. Yet if one panel fails, wind and rain come straight into the main living space.
Configurations
- Two-panel: one fixed and one sliding panel, the standard size on many homes.
- Three-panel: wider openings, usually with one or two operating panels.
- Four-panel: two panels meet in the middle and slide outward for a wide opening.
- Pocketing: panels slide into a pocket in the wall so the opening clears completely. This usually means framing work and costs more.
- Corner or multi-slide: for owners who want the lanai fully open to the room.
What changes with an impact slider
The frames are deeper and heavier, the glass is laminated and often insulated, and the interlocks between panels are reinforced. Rollers have to carry that weight, so quality hardware matters. A good impact slider still glides with one hand. Ask about the sill height too: taller sills resist water better, and lower sills are easier to step over.
Water is the everyday test
Summer rain on the Treasure Coast often comes sideways, and the slider sill is where it shows up first. Every slider carries a water rating in addition to its design pressure. Under a screened lanai the door is somewhat sheltered, while an unscreened patio facing the weather needs a stronger water rating. We match the door to where it faces.
Old sliders we often see
Older homes can still have aluminum sliders with single-pane tempered glass and worn rollers. Tempered glass is safety glass, not impact glass: it breaks into small pieces and leaves the opening open. Replacing those panels with new tempered glass does not add storm protection. The fix is a rated door, or a rated shutter in front of it.
Permit and sizing
In Port St. Lucie a slider is permitted with the exterior door and window application and its product approval. Keeping the same opening size is straightforward. Going wider is a structural opening job with engineered plans, a new header and more time, and we show that cost separately.
What a Slider Job Includes
Sliders are heavy and custom, so the quote spells out each step.
Door and panel layout
Panel count, which panels slide, and the direction they open, listed with the product approval.
Glass package
Laminated or insulated laminated glass with Low-E for sun-facing openings.
Removal
Old frame and panels removed and hauled away without damaging tile at the sill where possible.
Sill and water management
Sill set level and sealed, with the water rating matched to exposure.
Opening changes
Widening or pocketing, with the structural permit and engineered header.

Typical Impact Slider Costs
| Job | Typical range, installed |
|---|---|
| Hurricane impact sliding door, installed | $2,000 to $3,000 |
| Removing an old sliding door | $100 to $250 |
| Storm shutters for a patio door instead (per sq ft) | $10 to $55 |
Ranges from HomeAdvisor's sliding glass door cost guide and HomeGuide's hurricane shutter cost guide. Wide three- and four-panel or pocketing sliders run well above the single-door range. Ranges vary with width, height, panel count, glass and wall work. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Slider Replacement Works
1. Measure and assess
We measure the rough opening, check the header and sill, and note what the door faces.
2. Pick the layout
Panel count, operating panels, glass and frame color are chosen and priced.
3. Permit and order
We submit the permit with approvals; custom sliders are built to the measured size.
4. Install and adjust
The old door comes out, the new frame is anchored and sealed, and panels are adjusted to glide.
5. Inspect
Final inspection is scheduled and you get the approval paperwork.

Impact Sliding Glass Doors Questions
Are impact sliding doors hard to open?
A well-built unit with good rollers slides easily despite the weight. Very large panels are heavier, and some owners choose a smaller operating panel for daily use.
Can I just replace the glass in my old slider?
You can, but new tempered glass in an old frame is not impact protection. For storm protection the whole door needs to be rated, or covered by a rated shutter.
How wide can an impact slider be?
Multi-panel systems can cover openings well over twelve feet. Larger units carry higher design pressure demands, so the exact size depends on the product approval.
Should I choose accordion shutters instead?
Accordions cost less and work well across a slider. The trade-off is that someone has to close them before every storm. Many owners pick impact glass for the main living-room slider and shutters elsewhere.
