No Panels, No Ladders, No Calls From Up North

Impact windows appeal to Hobe Sound owners for a simple reason: they work without anyone being home. Hobe Sound's median age was 56.9 in the 2020 census, with about a third of residents 65 or older, and 15.6 percent of its 7,366 homes were vacant at count time, many of them second homes. Hauling storm panels up a ladder is hard at any age, and arranging for someone to do it while you are out of state is harder. Laminated glass that is always in place takes that off the list.

A town shaped by a storm

Hobe Sound's history is tied to hurricanes. During the 1920s land boom, developers planned a movie-making town here and briefly renamed it Picture City. The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane ended that boom, and the old name came back. The Olympia School, opened in 1925 as the Picture City School, operated until 1962. Today the community runs along the coast from Port Salerno south to Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

What to expect from impact glass

  • The glass may crack if hit but stays in the frame, so the house stays closed
  • Laminated panes cut outdoor noise compared with older windows
  • The interlayer blocks most UV light, which helps protect floors and furniture from fading
  • Impact windows are heavier than standard units, so they need solid openings and correct anchoring

They are not unbreakable, and a cracked impact pane still needs replacing after a storm. The point is that the opening holds.

Older homes and the buck

Hobe Sound has homes from many decades, and on older block houses the wood buck around each opening is often worn. We inspect every buck as the old window comes out. If it is soft or split, we replace it before setting the new window so the anchors have something solid to bite into.

Permits from Martin County

Hobe Sound is unincorporated, so Martin County issues the permit. The county asks for an application, a window and door schedule, a floor plan and product approvals. If you will not be in town for the work, we can coordinate access and send photos of progress, and the inspector's sign-off goes on record with the county.

Mixing products for value

Not every opening needs the same solution. Some owners put impact windows everywhere and add an impact sliding glass door at the back. Others pair impact windows with accordion shutters on a large screened lanai. We lay out a few combinations so you can choose what fits how you use the house.

Laminated glass and security

The same interlayer that holds glass together in a storm also makes a window harder to break through. A burglar who cracks the pane still faces a sheet held in place by plastic. For owners who leave the house empty for months, that added resistance is a welcome side benefit, though impact glass is not a substitute for locks and an alarm.

Hobe Sound Questions

Can the work be done while I am away for the season?

Often yes, with arrangements for access. We coordinate inspections with the county and keep you updated during the job.

Do impact windows stop fading?

The laminated interlayer blocks most ultraviolet light, which reduces fading of floors and fabrics. It does not stop it entirely, since visible light also causes some fading.

Will I still need shutters?

Not on openings that get impact-rated windows or doors. Owners sometimes keep or add shutters on openings they are not replacing yet.
