Why Accordions Are So Common Here
Accordion shutters are folding aluminum blades that hang in a track above and below an opening and stack neatly at the side when open. On Treasure Coast homes they often cover lanai openings, sliding doors, front entries and second-floor balconies, because they stay on the house all year and close without tools. When a storm approaches, you unlatch the stack, pull the blades across, and lock them in the center or at the end.
Where they work best
- Sliding glass doors and lanai openings: wide spans that would take many storm panels.
- Front entries with sidelites: one accordion can cover the door and the glass beside it.
- Second-floor windows and balconies: closed from inside or the balcony, no ladder.
- Corner openings: accordions can turn a corner with a post, protecting two walls at once.
What to look for
The blades, tracks and locking hardware are tested together, and the product approval sets maximum widths and heights for a given design pressure. Heavier blades and properly spaced anchors matter more than color. Key locks or thumb latches let you lock the shutter from inside on some openings. Ask how the center mate locks, how many anchors go into the wall, and whether the bottom track has drain holes so it does not collect water.
Living with them
Accordions need a little care to keep working. Salt air and summer dust collect in the tracks, so a rinse and a dry silicone spray once or twice a year keep rollers moving. Close each one at the start of hurricane season to make sure nothing has stiffened. Stack covers are available if you want them less visible from the street, and colors such as white, ivory and bronze blend with most stucco.
Trade-offs to know
They are visible when stacked, and on a narrow window the stack can block part of the view. They also do nothing until someone closes them, which matters for seasonal residents. For owners away from June to November, impact glass or motorized roll-downs may make more sense on the main openings.
Permit
Accordion shutters are permitted in Port St. Lucie under the City's hurricane shutter permit, which lists accordion as a shutter type and requires a layout plan and Florida Product Approval with installation instructions.

Accordion Shutters Questions
How long does it take to close accordion shutters?
Usually a minute or two per opening for one person. A full house of accordions can be closed in well under an hour.
Can accordion shutters be locked from inside?
Some can. On doors, a key lock on the outside and a thumb latch inside are common. We set up the locks so at least one exit stays usable.
Do accordions rust?
The blades and tracks are aluminum, which does not rust, but steel fasteners and rollers can corrode near salt air. Rinsing and lubricating once or twice a year helps.
Will accordions block my view?
Only where the stack sits beside the opening. On wide sliders the stack is a small part of the width; on narrow windows it can take up more, so we plan which side it goes on.
